I am a native Montanan. I was educated in Missoula grade and high schools. I am a Vietnam-era veteran. I am a 1973 graduate of the University of Montana with a BA in English/journalism. I taught secondary English and journalism during a 26 year career in Western Montana schools

I love the Montana outdoors and actively pursue camping, hiking, hunting and fishing with C, my spouse and companion for the past 36 years.

I am an avid follower of Montana college and prep sports.

• I can clearly remember the first Montana basketball and football games I attended.

• My favorite childhood Griz basketball star was Rudolph, "Zip" Rhoades.

• I remember clearly watching Terry Dillon's 98 yard touchdown run in 1961 or 62.

• I was a freshman-sophomore in high school during the heyday of Missoula Spartan prep basketball dominance.

• My all-time favorite prep sports activity was following the Florence Falcon football team to its state Montana Class C Championship in 1978.

Of course, I have many more fond memories of Western Montana sports.

I was a sports writer for a major Western Montana daily newspaper for eight years, serving as Grizzly men's beat writer for one year and Lady Griz beat writer for one year.

My objective at the Grizzly Journal is to resume -- on this site -- the style of sports coverage I employed during my journalistic career.

Though I am a Montana Grizzly sports fan, I will make every effort to employ objective and responsible journalistic principles. However, this site will pursue a "personal journalistic" style of coverage.

THE OBJECTIVES OF GRIZZLY JOURNAL

My expertise is basketball. I studied under Jud Heathcote and later was a high school level basketball coach. My primary coverage objective will be the Montana Grizzlies, and then the Montana Lady Griz and area prep teams. I am the sole owner, writer and photographer of Grizzly Journal. So, the scope of my coverage will be limited to my ability (given normal time constraints after my 8-hour per day occupation) to cover, write about and photograph local teams.

I have an informed fan's knowledge of football, softball and baseball and so those sports will receive secondary coverage. I am NOT knowledgable regarding volleyball, soccer, golf, wrestling, lacrosse or other college-level sports and therefore do not consider myself capable of covering those sports in depth.
