Santa Clara 60, Montana 49
I did a running game-commentary with Colin O'Keefe over at Grizzoulian tonight. I'll let that serve as an adequate in-depth analysis of this game, won 60-49 by the homestanding Santa Clara Broncos.
The story of the game was in the stats: another disastrous first-half shooting output from the team (20 points equaled the season low they scored at home against the Portland Pilots) and then several missed front-ends of one-and-one free throw opportunities in the late going after the Grizzlies had narrowed the gap to eight points. The Griz shot 23 percent in the first half and ended up shooting 33 percent from the field and 35 percent from three-point range. The Griz lose by 11 but shoot only 53 percent from the free throw line (7-for-13).
I know there are several Grizzly Journal readers who study basketball statistics carefully. Maybe they can provide some info on shooting percentages as a gauge for winning success. I'm not certain of the precise percentage, but I believe it's broadly acknowledged that a college basketball team won't win very often if it shoots consistently below 43 percent from the field.
The Grizzlies' season-long field goal shooting average is above 43 percent, but dropping steadily after 35 percent shooting nights against Portland and Santa Clara.
A final note on Grizzly Commentator Mick Holien's broadcast. Former Montana shooting guard Mike Warhank (1996-99) did an excellent job supporting Holien's play-by-play with accurate, objective and observant color analysis. Thanks to Mick & Mike for a some great broadcasting!
43 % is fine ... better than fine ... for a 3 point average. 43% for actual field goal percentage is
disgusting.
I’m pissed ... at Tinkle !!!
As long as Tinkle continues with the, “work it inside only as the first option to score”, WE WILL CONTINUE TO LOOSE !! Way to much time is wasted, and way to many good open shots from outside are passed up.
When guards are forced to burn most of the shot clock looking for ways to jam it inside, they end up having to throw up off balance, desperation last second shot clock buzzer beaters. Thus the poor percentage. If Martin actually dares take a 3 pointer as the first option to score, Tinkle will bench him and chew his butt actually trying to play SMART basketball.
After burning much shot clock time, and many good outside opportunities, then finally getting the ball inside, Andrew did a great. The problem is, many other great outside opportunities were wasted, and ended up as shot clock buzzer beaters. No wonder the percentage was down.
The only reason we even came back a little towards the end of the Santa Clara game, was because Rundles and Stauds starting shooting. Tinkle should have put Martin in, and told him to SCORE, not waste time trying to force the inside when it just isn’t there.
Tinkle gets obstinate and will bench guards, if they dare shoot a jumper as the first option. That is CRAZY !!!!
As long as Tinkle keeps his “inside ONLY first” attitude, we will loose. His unfounded, single minded obsession to go inside first ISN’T WORKING.
Every team in the Big Sky knows all they have to do is clamp down on Andrew. They know Tinkle will punish his guards if they dare shoot from beyond the arc, unless there is only 2 seconds left on the shot clock.
Martin played 14 minutes tonight against Santa Clara. We were winning more than loosing when Martin was playing 35 minutes, running the offense and scoring from outside.... NUFF SAID !!!
PS
Come on guys, ... 7 for 13 free throws ... as if you didn’t know, that’s pitiful !!!!
